Today's Bible VerseFor they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
At the beginning of Psalm 44, the writer remembers how the Lord defended and fought for the Israelites in the past. When they departed from Egypt, they did not lift their swords; instead, they waited for the Lord to move on their behalf in a way that only He could do. This verse gives us strength today, reminding us that the Lord cares for us and fights for us always.
Do you remember how the Israelites fled from their captors in Egypt? The Lord sent 10 plagues, and when the Egyptian army raced after the Israelites, He parted the Red Sea—and as soon as the Israelites passed, the Egyptians drowned. The Lord moved in a way that was supernatural; no human could replicate it, and no human would be foolish enough to claim that the Israelites fought their way out. It was clear that the Lord was on their side.
The Israelites had the strength to do the impossible because they knew that the Lord was with them. They knew that their fate was entirely in the Lord's hands, and nothing that they could do would stop His purposes. Today, we're a lot like the Israelites. We face battles every day that none of us could ever hope to win. None of us is any match for the temptations of sin, and yet God intervened in our hearts and gave us the strength to make decisions that honor Him. If He can change our hearts, the Lord can do anything in our lives.
Whatever you are facing today, take a moment to be strengthened in the promises of God. He knows exactly what you need, and He cares about all of your needs being met. If you need rest, peace, healing, encouragement, a job, or a miracle, be bold and ask the Lord to provide for you. Ask that He would strengthen you to abide well in the waiting.
The Lord offers us the strength to carry us through even the darkest and deepest valleys. When the Israelites were surrounded by the Red Sea and the Egyptians, they cried out in fear. However, Moses turned to the Lord and prayed. He got his strength and courage from the Lord, and the rest is history.
Dear Lord, thank you for being the one to fight for me always. I'm not able to defend myself; I'm not able to do anything by my own means—and you have not asked me to! Help me to sit faithfully and wait for you, resting in the strength that you alone provide. I love you, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.
If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

Yesterday's Bible VerseFor God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.:
In today's verse Paul writes to Timothy, whom he is training in ministry. Paul suspects that he will soon be executed by Emperor Nero, and he reminds Timothy that God did not give him a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and strength. If Paul could state these words with confidence from his prison cell, we know that he experienced them to be true. Today, we are also beneficiaries of this promise.
What does it mean to have a spirit of fear, and why is it so important that we fight it off? Think about something that you are afraid of. What causes you the most worry and anxiety? Now, think about who God is. He is omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnibenevolent (all-loving). There is nothing you can fear that is not in the charge of the Lord, and we can trust His actions because we know that He is loving. Even if our fears do come true, we can rest knowing that the Lord's love endures. Knowing the character of God helps us reject a spirit of fear.
To replace our fear, we have power, love, and a sound mind. We have power through prayer… we have access to God almighty through our words! The Lord is always fighting for us; we are never left alone. We also have love through Jesus; we have experienced the love of God personally through our own salvation. We need only to look at the cross to remember His faithfulness to us. Finally, we have a sound mind, which is another way of saying self-control. We have the ability through Jesus to resist sin and to continue to follow the Lord, especially when it is difficult.
When power, love, and a sound mind reign in the place of fear, we will become more and more like Jesus. Instead of worrying about the future or being anxious, we will be able to rest in His name. The Lord wants more for us than to fight against our own emotions. He welcomes us into full life with Him. Paul knew this was true as he sat in prison, and we can be assured of it today.
Dear Lord, thank you for giving me a way out of anxiety and fear. Thank you for giving me power, love, and a sound mind. Please help me turn to you when I am troubled because you alone hold the answers I seek. In Jesus' name, amen.
