In this verse, King David gives us a sweet reminder about the constant nearness of the Lord. The Lord doesn't turn away from us when we are broken or expect us to fix ourselves—quite the contrary, in fact. He is "nigh" to the brokenhearted, meaning nearby. Let's explore what this means and how it affects our response to periods of sadness and depression in our lives.

When is the last time that something broke your heart? I think about the time when a friend I liked decided to no longer have a relationship with me, and I didn't understand why. It hurt, and I wanted a way out of the pain. While I didn't find a quick-fix, I did find comfort in the fact that the Lord is a perfect friend to me… and He is near to me even when I am upset.

If you are struggling with depression, cling to the truth that the Lord is near you. It may seem that He is far, far away, but this verse reminds us that is not the case. Also remember that sometimes it's tough to distinguish truth from feelings. While our feelings may say that the Lord couldn't possibly love us and let us suffer or hurt or be depressed, this verse reminds us of the truth—that the Lord is right next to us in our pain. He does not turn us away when we call out to Him.

The verse continues by saying that the Lord saved those who are of a "contrite spirit." In other words, if you are struggling because of past sin in your life, you have proof that your sins are forgiven once and for all. You are saved by the grace of God and no longer bound to sin. You are set free! When the Lord looks at you, He sees a son or a daughter in Christ… and He loves you more than we could ever comprehend.

Today, rest in the truth that the Lord will guide us through the painful moments in our lives and bring us closer and closer to Him. He is near to the brokenhearted and contrite in spirit, and He loves you.

Today's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for being near to me, even when I'm struggling with depression and brokenness. Thank you for loving me so deeply and for being so kind to me. Please open my eyes so I can see and understand your love in new ways; help me to rest in your arms. Thank you for being perfect and loving always. In Jesus' name, amen.

Yesterday's Bible Verse
Psalm 44:3 (KJV)

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. :

Yesterday's Bible study

At the beginning of Psalm 44, the writer remembers how the Lord defended and fought for the Israelites in the past. When they departed from Egypt, they did not lift their swords; instead, they waited for the Lord to move on their behalf in a way that only He could do. This verse gives us strength today, reminding us that the Lord cares for us and fights for us always.

Do you remember how the Israelites fled from their captors in Egypt? The Lord sent 10 plagues, and when the Egyptian army raced after the Israelites, He parted the Red Sea—and as soon as the Israelites passed, the Egyptians drowned. The Lord moved in a way that was supernatural; no human could replicate it, and no human would be foolish enough to claim that the Israelites fought their way out. It was clear that the Lord was on their side.

The Israelites had the strength to do the impossible because they knew that the Lord was with them. They knew that their fate was entirely in the Lord's hands, and nothing that they could do would stop His purposes. Today, we're a lot like the Israelites. We face battles every day that none of us could ever hope to win. None of us is any match for the temptations of sin, and yet God intervened in our hearts and gave us the strength to make decisions that honor Him. If He can change our hearts, the Lord can do anything in our lives.

Whatever you are facing today, take a moment to be strengthened in the promises of God. He knows exactly what you need, and He cares about all of your needs being met. If you need rest, peace, healing, encouragement, a job, or a miracle, be bold and ask the Lord to provide for you. Ask that He would strengthen you to abide well in the waiting.

The Lord offers us the strength to carry us through even the darkest and deepest valleys. When the Israelites were surrounded by the Red Sea and the Egyptians, they cried out in fear. However, Moses turned to the Lord and prayed. He got his strength and courage from the Lord, and the rest is history.

Yesterday's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for being the one to fight for me always. I'm not able to defend myself; I'm not able to do anything by my own means—and you have not asked me to! Help me to sit faithfully and wait for you, resting in the strength that you alone provide. I love you, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.
