As every parent knows, toddlers have a tendency to hide when they have been naughty. If they break something, hurt their sibling, or take a toy or other item that didn't belong to them, they don't want anyone to find out. They might lie, cry, or run away when asked what has happened. How toddlers learn to react in these situations will play a big part in how they act when they are older.
When we come to Christ, we are leaving behind the part of our lives when we didn't know any better. We didn't realize the impact that our actions had on our hearts, minds, and souls.
But after coming to Christ, we have the Holy Spirit to help us.
Some people never move past the toddler years of their walk with Christ. They sin and try to cover it up, hoping that no one will find out. Instead, they should learn that rather than punishment, God's grace and mercy are waiting for them.

This afternoon's verse in Proverbs says that when we cover our sin, we will not prosper. It shows a lack of maturity in our relationship with God to continue with this type of behavior. As long as we try to justify or hide our wrongdoings, we are unable to receive God's grace, and we will not grow and prosper in our relationship with Him.
But as soon as we confess and turn away from our sin, God's mercy is there waiting for us. Our goal should be to grow closer to God every day and allow Him to show us how to mature in our faith.

Afternoon Prayer
Dear Lord, I'm so grateful that You have saved me. No longer do I have to live in sin or apart from your presence. There are times when I'm ashamed of the things I have done. I know that you don't condemn or give up on me. You offer me mercy. Help me humble myself, so I can receive your grace and make me more like you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Yesterday's Afternoon Bible Verse

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

During the winter months in many parts of the world, the temperature gets colder. Plants and trees shed their leaves and go dormant. Some plants don't survive the winter, while others need the cold weather as part of their life cycle. In the spring, however, everything changes. What appeared to be dead is now bursting forth with new life.
This can be compared to our spiritual life. We face seasons of growth followed by dry and stagnant seasons, which is why it's essential to stay close to God during every season of life.
In this afternoon's verse in John, Jesus says that He is the "vine" and we are the "branches". When we abide in Him, He abides in us, and we will bring forth much fruit. These are comforting words, especially during the tough seasons of life.

The fruit in this scripture refers to qualities such as love, joy, peace, wisdom, patience... the list goes on. The character of God is produced in our lives as we stay connected to Him.
There are times when growth doesn't take place in our lives because we are not connected to God the way we should be. Our prayer should be for God to prune us as needed so we stay connected to Him in every season of life.

Yesterday's Afternoon Prayer
Dear Lord, I want to keep maturing in my faith and growing closer to you. Thank you for the opportunity to abide in you. Make me aware of the times when I'm not staying connected to you. Give me a hunger to spend time in prayer and reading your Word. Remove the parts of me that hinder me from knowing you better. Produce good fruit in my life and make me more like you every single day. In Jesus' name, amen.
