Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Afternoon Bible study

We are born with an innate desire to know our Creator and have a relationship with Him. But how can we get to know a God who is unseen, untouchable, and beyond our comprehension?

God's Word tells us who He is. It's alive and speaks to us the same today as it did to those who lived thousands of years ago. Through studying the Bible, we can come to an understanding of God that goes beyond brain knowledge and penetrates our hearts. It has the power to transform our lives into God's image.

The Bible gives us historical accounts of those, like Job, who lived through unthinkable circumstances and chose to serve God. As we examine genealogies, we can see God's intricate plan to send Jesus to us that spans generations.

When we observe the intentionality of everything God does, our faith is strengthened. God has always been faithful to His people, so we know that He will never leave us.

The Bible is more than mere words. This afternoon's verse reminds us that even the deepest parts of our lives, those that are hidden or have become hardened to God's Spirit, can be pierced and changed by His power.

Our thoughts are often in conflict with what God wants for our lives. The more we study God's Word, the more our hearts submit to God's love and authority.

In our personal relationships, the more we get to know others, the more we can trust them. In the Bible, we can see God's track record. Throughout all of history, He has been the same faithful and loving God, and He will never change.

Dear Lord, give me a strong desire to study your Word. Help me not take for granted the opportunity the Bible provides for me to know who you are. I want to love and live your Word so that my thoughts and actions can be transformed into who you want me to be. Thank you for giving me wisdom as a guide to help me make the right decisions. I'm grateful that you have made a way for me to know how to follow you. Help me hunger and thirst for more of you and your Word. In Jesus' name, amen.

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explaination is that we were made for another world.

The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.

Isaiah 41:13 (KJV)

For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. :

Yesterday Afternoon's Bible study

In this verse, we find a tender reminder that the Lord is always with us and we do not have to be afraid in any circumstances. Whatever we are facing today, the Lord is right next to us and will help us see it to the end. As we look ahead to the new year, we can remember that the Lord will be with us every single moment of the next 365 days of 2022.

One thing that stands out to me about this verse is how the Lord recognizes that the Israelites might be afraid. In the context of this chapter of Isaiah, the Israelites are facing battles with other nations. The Lord understands their fear, and instead of telling them they were wrong to be afraid or chiding them for their lack of faith, He simply reminds them that He is right there with them.

Today, whatever you are experiencing—whether on the highest peak of a mountain, in the lowest valley, or somewhere in between—the Lord is willing to hold your hand. He does not look down on you for your weakness; in fact, he will help you overcome it. Whatever you are experiencing, you never have to face it alone. The very God of the universe loves you and will walk side by side with you.

We need to remember, though, that God will only hold our hand if we extend it to Him. He will not forcefully grab our hand to take control—but when we offer it to Him, He will gladly take it. We do not have to provide anything except our willingness to be helped by the Lord and He will answer and help us.

Think about beginning 2022 with your hands open. We will need the Lord even more than we realize, so go ahead and commit yourself to rely on Him to help you through everything. Know that He will be with you and that because of His presence, you have no reason to fear. Instead, look forward to the brand-new year with joy and anticipation because you will discover more and more the almighty power of the Lord.

Dear Lord, I thank you that you care about my fears and that when I think about you, they all go away. Your name makes my fears vanish because I remember that you are so much more powerful than all of them. Help me to cling to you in 2022, firmly rooted in who you are. In Jesus' name, amen.
