The words "but God" appear more than 40 times throughout Scripture. Almost every time you read the words, it is in reference to a desperate situation that, without God, would be impossible to face.

Psalm 73 was written by a man named Asaph. He was one of three people that King David commissioned to lead worship in the tabernacle. Asaph and his descendants were intentional about worshiping God. He taught and ministered with his sons and others, who did the same down the line for generations.

In this Scripture, the psalmist writes that our flesh and heart will fail. There's no doubt about it--at some point we will fail. But he doesn't end there. He goes on to say that God is the strength of our hearts and everything we need forever.


At times, we feel weak and unable to stand, but God is always there to give us His supernatural strength. It is impossible to please God on our own without His power. Our very best is nothing without His grace in our lives.

It is important for us to get back up when we fall and not allow the enemy to defeat us. We are defeated when we allow our mistakes and sins to overwhelm us until we give up. Even if we are disappointed in ourselves, God can give us the strength to keep going. Our willingness to move forward in our faith will encourage others when they face times of failure. We can have peace that no matter what, God will never give up on us.
Afternoon Prayer
Lord, I realize that I have failed you. My best efforts often have a disappointing ending. But you are my strength in times of weakness. I don't have to remain defeated. You have provided everything I need forever--whether it's forgiveness, grace, mercy, or power, it is available to me when I ask. Remind me to come to you when I fail. I know, you do not condemn me. You continuously offer your faithful love in my life. Thank you. In Jesus's name, amen.

"Every day is a gift from God. Before we were born, God knew what each day of our lives would hold and how long we would live. He knows every failure and every success, and He loves us no matter what.

There are some days when we'd love to have a do-over, and other days we would like to forget altogether … but every one of our days was created by God. Rather than being burdened by the stress in our lives, we can choose to rejoice and give thanks.

Our joy isn't dependent on everything going well in life because our joy comes from the Lord. Sometimes that means our flesh doesn't want to rejoice, but we can still be joyful in our spirit.

Psalm 118 also encourages us to worship God with others, saying, "we will rejoice and be glad." When we gather together with others who love the Lord, it encourages us in our mutual faith.

Every day is a new opportunity to share God's love with others … and another day to embrace the love God has for us.
Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer
God, thank you for every new day that you give to me. Help me to seek you first every morning and worship you throughout the day. I'm so glad that you walk with me every step of the way. Help me to rejoice, whether I'm having the best day I've ever experienced or the worst. When I feel overwhelmed, please remind me to honor you in every moment of the day. In Jesus's name, amen.
